From my perspective, the more wild and contrived an explanation becomes, the more likely the person making the claim is willing to offer anything, regardless of how implausible it may be, in order to support their position. I have always heard this referred to as someone “grasping at straws”. Wiktionary defines “grasping at straws” as:
To guess randomly at or pursue any apparent option, as due to lack of options or information.
Multiverse Theory is the assertion that there could possibly be any number of multiple co-existing universes continually emerging each bearing random attributes. This is offered as a possible explanation as to how earth might have come to exist in such an astronomically (pun intended) unlikely cosmic balance.

Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover. That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact. – Robert Jastrow
